An island cage shows its warning signs early.

Rust streaks at the screw heads. Panels gone chalky. A door that drags. Salt works an island cage harder than anything on the mainland. Siesta Key, Lido, Longboat Key, or Cortez living is easy, but tough on lanai cages. Schedule your FREE, no obligation inspection with written estimate today.

What the islands do to a screen enclosure

Salt is the first factor. Ordinary zinc-coated screws give up early in salt spray, which is why rust streaks at the screw heads are the most common sight on an island cage, and why contractors who work the keys carry marine-grade 316 stainless as a matter of routine. The aluminum frame underneath is usually still sound. Renewing the fasteners once, all of them, keeps it that way.

Insects are the second. The no-see-um that owns these islands breeds in salt marsh and mangrove fringe, which describes the bay side of Siesta and Longboat and most of the Cortez shoreline. Standard 18/14 mesh does not stop a one-millimeter midge. A 20/20 weave does, on the walls that face the mangroves.

Sun is the third. West- and Gulf-facing walls chalk and go brittle ahead of the shaded side, and the afternoon load on a pool deck is a reason many island cages carry solar shade mesh on one wall and standard screen everywhere else.

Tell us which island you're on and what you're seeing. Your contractor looks at the cage in person and puts the estimate in writing.

  • Replace corroded screws with marine-grade stainless before salt air spreads to the frame
  • Keep the aluminum frame you already paid for and renew everything around it
  • Mesh matched to your exposure, 20/20 on the mangrove side, standard where the breeze matters
  • Get rid of torn corners, loose spline, and patched panels in one visit
  • Stop fighting doors that stick, drag, or refuse to latch
  • Enjoy the breeze without the no-see-ums
  • Association jobs handled with the paperwork in mind

Which mesh, and where

Mesh Salt-air behavior Airflow Best on the islands for
Standard fiberglass 18/14 Ages fastest of the group out here Best Protected, bay-shaded lanais and cages with years left in the frame
No-see-um 20/20 Same substrate as standard Slightly reduced Bayfront and mangrove-edge walls, dusk sitters
Polyester super-screen Resists the white chalking fiberglass develops Comparable Owners who would rather rescreen once
Solar shade 65–90% Long-lived Most reduced West- and Gulf-facing sun walls only
Pet-grade vinyl polyester Vinyl coating handles salt well Reduced Lower panels where claws live
Florida glass Laminated, opaque, solid to wind None Boundary walls, spray sides, privacy bands

The contractor mixes these inside one cage. The estimate visit is where that decision gets made, standing at the panel in question.

Warning signs worth a visit

Rust streaks below the screw heads are the cage's first visible symptom of salt, and they point toward the fasteners rather than the frame. Mesh that has gone chalky white across a whole wall is at the end of its life, and patching it tends to become a habit. A bent or creased frame member, or a cage that sits crooked after a storm, is structural work and should be looked at before anyone says what it needs. None of these gets diagnosed from a form. All of them get sorted out in person.

Four islands, four permit desks

Siesta Key answers to Sarasota County. Lido, St. Armands, and Bird Key sit inside the City of Sarasota. Longboat Key runs its own building division. Cortez is Manatee County, whose own guidance says rescreening an existing enclosure needs a contractor but not a permit. Mesh-only rescreens inside an unchanged frame generally do not require a permit in any of the four. Frame repair and new screen walls do. Contractors in this network know which desk applies to your address and handle it when it applies.

On much of Longboat and in the Gulf-front condominiums, lanai screens are commonly treated as limited common elements. The declaration decides whether the owner or the association pays, and the association usually sets the approved mesh and color. Bring that answer to the estimate visit and the contractor will work inside it.

After the storm that came here

Hurricane Milton made landfall at Siesta Key itself on October 9, 2024, thirteen days after Helene's surge, and screen enclosures were among the most-repaired structures in the county afterward. If your cage rode it out, this season is the time to have someone look at what it cost the fasteners and the bracing cables. Sarasota County Emergency Management publishes the county's seasonal preparedness guidance, and the quiet months before June are when a cage gets looked at without a queue.
